Truman and the Atomic Bomb Throughout history there have usually always been more than two sides to each event that has happened. After events occur, the stories of how and why it happened can get easily switched up and twisted. People may also question why a particular Historic figure decided to do an act that they did, and if it was the right thing to do. That is exactly what has happened with the dropping of the first atomic bomb, lead by President Harry Truman. For many years historians have questioned if Truman dropping the bomb was the right thing to do. They wanted to know his reasoning behind dropping this huge atomic bomb. Historians could argue that Truman was simply dropping the bomb to stop the war, but people can also argue that he dropped the bomb to stop or threaten the Russians. It was the right thing to do. Yes, the amount of deaths of the people of Hiroshima was a lot. If you really think about it, what else would the Americans have done? The Japanese and the Americans have been participating in battles against each other for quite a time. Also, during that time period, it isn’t like the Americans could have just went over to Japan and have a conversation with them about compromise. They both saw each other as threats, so when one saw the other they would panic and get defensive. What if this was a debate in the modern world? It would not be the right thing to do. All other nations have gained knowledge in technology and weapons, so if we tried to drop another huge atomic bomb on Japan, they could potentially hit us back five times harder. What could have happened though, is maybe the Americans could have dropped a smaller bomb, or maybe not an atomic bomb. Then if the Japanese were to try and attack back, the Americans could drop the atomic bomb as defense.Yet on the day of the attack, were the Japanese even expecting to be hit at such mass
