In the short story Truth and Consequences by Brendan Gill, a young man realizes the truth in his life. Throughout his life he had let himself believe that he wanted to be a priest, up until he met a strange girl. It seems the girl has been dealt her fair share of bad things, but she is brutally honest. She sets the tone, plot and reveals the theme. The girl helps everyone around her realize the truth will set them free. The girl sets the tone with her personality. She is honest, interesting, and alluring. Everyone surrounds her, she is always “the center of a crowd of boys”. She would answer any question honestly, only saying the truth. The people around her catch her energy and act the same way. Charles was drawn to her, even though he didn’t want to be. He also didn’t want the truth when he asked her what she does, but she told it anyways. She is honest of her feelings, and makes everybody else do the same thing. Her straightforwardness is infectious. The girl is so open about her life it makes other people feel less vulnerable, so they open up too. Which leads to the moment that changes Charles’ life. When she gave an honest answer of what she does, Charles didn’t know what to do; “Charles felt himself stumbling. She had told him everything about herself. She had told him the truth, which he hadn’t wanted.”. Once she was in a vulnerable state, he was comfortable enough to let his guard down, to open up to a girl he barely knows.
