Michael, according to the social identity theory, would have two cognitive processes occuring when he joined the baseball team, categorization and identification. Michael first would have used categorization, the act of placing himself and others into categories based on his perception. While trying out, he could categorize based on skill, gender, race, and position. After making the varsity team he could still categorize based on skill, gender, race, position, and starter. After making his categorization of others, Michael would have categorized himself based on the same categories he placed others into. As the group has already formed and is clearly in the storming stage, I would suggest taking additional time to re-acquaint with each other. By taking a step back and learning about how each other works, the members can hopefully find some common ground. I would suggest divulging some personal information to allow for the members to become more comfortable. After this occurs, I would suggest making a contract that has a plan for conflict and delegation. Then, the members will be able to work more effectively. When they if they do come across the storming stage after realigning priorities, they will be able to use the conflict in a productive way to continuing or re-enter into the norming stage. Another theory is the relational cohesion theory. This theory basically states that people form stronger bonds to groups that give them positive feelings/emotions. The more you like/ respect the people in your groups, the better your performance, as cohesion has a direct link to performance. I would suggest to start giving each other compliments. (While working as a camp counselor, we had two put-ups for every put down, and it was amazing to see how kids reacted to the put-ups.) They could be personal or professional like, “Linda, thanks for logging that data. A second characteristic would be gender, which is a diffuse characteristic. Based on the occupations and perceived ability, I would predict that the two surgeons would have more influence than the nurse. Then using the diffuse characteristic, I would predict that the African American male surgeon would have the most influence on the medical team during the diagnosing task. Then the Latina female surgeon would have the second highest influence. The European American male nurse would have the least influence during the diagnosing task because of his occupation as a nurse. During the dinner, diffuse characteristics would be more important than the occupation of the individuals. Using race, gender, and country of origin, I would predict that the European American Male would have the most influence while at the restaurant.
