One sunny day, a young girl by the name of Beth traveled one day to “Mitchell Gail’s,” which is her “go to” store. Beth needs to purchase clothes for her Uncle Al’s birthday party. As she browses through clothes she meets a friendly employee whose name is Hannah. Hannah offers hold on to Beth’s belongings while she goes into the changing room to try on clothes. As soon as she steps out of the changing room, she is caught by Madge P. Groton who is the head security guard of the store.

In the beginning of the story Mrs. Bigio is unsympathetic to the kids in school, especially Mai Thi because she is still wrapped around her husband's unheroic death. Rather than try to understand where Mai Thi is coming from, she takes her anger out on her when she says, “Pick it up and be glad you're getting it. You shouldn't even be here, sitting like a queen in a refugee home while American boys are sitting in swamps on Christmas Day. They're the ones who should be here. Not you” (95).

Torey Hayden is sure in for a wild ride when she accepts what she calls the “garbage class” in her book “One child”. Through this insightful book Hayden is tasks with instructing these unteachable students. Everything seems to be going smooth in her class and her and Aton even develop a routine with such things as morning discussions. However, she is soon challenged when a new student is added to her class. Shelia a troubled child nearly pushes Hayden to her breaking point in the beginning of the story.
People, sometimes are caring and helpful but often devilish and foul and we often put each other down by insulting one's ethnicity. In the novel “the Wednesday Wars” by Gary D. Schmidt Mai Thi a student at Camillo Junior High is a victim of this kind of misunderstanding. Earlier in the book the school cook, Mrs. Bigio had a husband fighting in the Vietnam war who was killed in action. She seemed to lay the blame on Mai Thi. After an “incident” involving two rats Mai Thi was teased about eating the rodents.
