Torey Hayden is sure in for a wild ride when she accepts what she calls the “garbage class” in her book “One child”. Through this insightful book Hayden is tasks with instructing these unteachable students. Everything seems to be going smooth in her class and her and Aton even develop a routine with such things as morning discussions. However, she is soon challenged when a new student is added to her class. Shelia a troubled child nearly pushes Hayden to her breaking point in the beginning of the story. Hope is not lost in this inspiring story where Hayden’s class transforms Sheila’s life and view on education. Shelia is a very complicated child with an equally complicated background. Not only is she destructive but she also refuses to participate in class. Through this disastrous day Hayden is being tested by Sheila. Sheila is seeing if Hayden is someone she can truly trust. There relationship takes time to develop in the novel as Sheila’s walls slowly come down. Hayden is really frustrated and discouraged at first with Sheila. “She grabbed the paper, wadded it up and threw it at me” (Hayden, 1980, p.20). In this situation Hayden tries to get Sheila to do math with to no avail. This example from the book really illustrates how frustrated Hayden had gotten with Sheila that day. That first day left Hayden feeling discouraged and she even broke down crying. However, the important thing was that she did not give up and tried again with Sheila. Even after a hectic day Hayden came back the next and ready to try again with Sheila. This is persistence in the classroom is something probably foreign to Sheila. In doing so Hayden shows that she is there for Sheila and won’t give up on her like past teachers and people. Hayden also understood that they would not make an instant bond overnight. She allowed Sheila to go at her pace and did not rush into anything. Unlike most teacher I feel Hayden was more patient and reassuring with Shelia. This is clear in the end of the chase during the first day. Hayden spends a half an hour trying to catch Shelia after she mutilated the fish. However, the important thing is she reassured Sheila that she was there for her and that she was not in trouble. Shelia now was very vulnerable and this part was really start of their relationship.
