In the novel Tuesdays With Morrie, author Mitch Albom tells the story of his inspirational professor at Brandeis University. Morrie Schwartz, his professor, teaches Mitch about how to live, and how to die. Morrie was featured on a Nightline episode starring Ted Koppel, which Mitch saw one day flicking through the channels. The first day he came, it was a Tuesday, and he then continued to come every Tuesday, learning different life lessons. Many themes exist in this inspirational novel, but three significant ones include: love, life and death, and rejection of popular culture.

Morrie believes that popular culture nowadays makes people feel bad about themselves. They see these perfect celebrities with so much money, so they compare themselves to them. Morrie says, “At one point, in the midst of “We’re number one! He rises and yells, What’s wrong with being number two (159)”. His message was that being number two is not bad. Nobody's perfect, and you can not be the best every single moment. Mitch said, “Morrie borrowed freely from all religions (81).” Popular culture now says that you should only be one religion and some religions are bad. This is not true as Morrie takes philosophies from all different kinds of Judaism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Morrie also does not care what other people think. Mitch says, “Once, he brought a tango tape and got them to play it over the speakers. Then he commandeered the floor, shooting back and forth like some hot Latin lover (6).” Many people become different people when they are around others.
