“Everybody’s at was with different things…I’m at war with my own heart sometimes.” Tupac Shakur was a Hip Hop rapper in East Harlem. Raised by a family of Black Panthers things weren’t easy for him and his family. Through thick and thin Tupac was able to make it to the top and inspired many people throughout his career. Tupac’s music influenced the people who listened to it.
Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971. He was the son of Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur. His mom, Afeni whole carrying her son was put in jail for bombing charges. He was born with the name Leasane Parish Crooks. His mom then renamed him Tupac Amaru which means “Royal Serpent.” The name Tupac Amaru was also the name of a South American revolutionary, who died after leading an uprising against Spanish rule. Throughout his childhood things were difficult. This was mostly because he was surrounded with people who were convicted of serious crimes or imprisoned. The absence of his father caused him to say “I never knew where my father was or who my father was for sure” (Cite). His godfather, Geronimo Pratt was a high-ranking Panther. His step-father, Mutulu was a drug dealer who also wasn’t present in his life to provide him with the discipline he needed. He wasn’t like most rappers that bragged about things such as being rich and having materialistic items. For example in one of his songs he says “I know it seems hard sometimes but remember one thing through every dark night, there’s a bright day after that. So no matter how hard it get, stick your chest out, keep ya head up….and handle it”.
