How does suspense, imagery, and foreshadowing play roles in stories. Roald Dahl, Richard Connell, and, Shirley Jackson all believe these elements play a very important role in stories. In Connell’s story General Zaroff likes to hunt a more smart game, humans. In The Landlady, Dahl a very old lady lures in young men to her boarding house to do sick deeds. In Jackson’s story The Lottery, the lottery is nothing but a horror show. Dahl, Connell, Jackson craft chilling tales that readers do not want to put down because of their setting, image, and foreshadowing. Setting is where the story takes place,now that the people know a little bit about setting, the people can tell its importance in the story, in setting the mood. You could have a dark rainy night, with a mysterious house. This setting creates a horror type of setting. You could use setting to show emotion, for suspense. “But may I not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of sports more diverting than Ivan’s”( Connell 228). In the story The most dangerous game it gives a very solid example of imagery. One example is how they describe, all rich and handsomely dressed with a luxury robes. People can imagine him being very rich and popular on a little island. In the Landlady Imagery is shown in a more hidden way. “ The fire was glowing in the hearth, and the little dachshund was still sleeping in front of it.” ( Dahl 3).
