Reader Response During my first time reading the story “Two Words” by Isabel Allende, I found myself left very confused, with so many unanswered questions, that I was unable to make sense of at all. Some of these questions that have me in a stump are: “why was the girl, Belisa Crepusculario nameless?, I was unsure if maybe it cost money to have a name ? Another question I have is “where does she live that is so inhospitable?” The Last few questions I have are by far the hardest for me to answer and they are; “why is she selling words?”, like do people have little to no vocabulary of their own that they would pay someone for their words? Through rereading I found that it is not only Belisa that didn 't have a name, it seemed that no one had a name not even her siblings. In the story Belisa states that she is “born in to a family so poor that they did not have names for their children” (Allende, pg 237) This got me thinking are they poor because they have never been to school and are uneducated? Well through reading yet again I found that it wasn 't until Belisa found “the poetry of “beauty” and “twilight” and cloaked herself in it” (Allende, pg 236) that she was able to find a name for herself. This had me thinking Belisa must have went to school and worked really hard and became literate. Now with this knowledge this allowed me to answer another one of my questions of “why is she selling words”. It became clear to me that the reason why Belsia was able to sell words is because she is educated and the people that live in her country must not have an education.
