English 10 P3 Shonbom Soleil Johnson Authenticity in A Silent Peace In the novel A Silent Peace by John Knowles, I believe that neither of the boys are entirely genuine because Finny is manipulative, and Gene villanizes Finny and sees him as an opponent instead of a friend; however, Finny is more genuine than Gene because he always believes in him and saw him as a true friend. From the start of the novel, Finny is shown to be popular amongst the staff and students at Devon due to the fact that he is naturally charismatic and charming. He knows how to flatter teachers and students alike and can lie without raising the slightest suspicion. At first glance, he may seem like a genuinely kind boy, but the people closest to him, like Gene, can see through him.

Through the microcosm of the school, the novel explores the destructive hierarchies and power struggles within society. One significant example of this is the trial in the Butt Room, where Brinker, the student leader, dominates over Gene, manipulating and pressuring him to falsely confess to a crime by claiming that Gene was “Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself”(89). This scene illustrates the destructive nature of power imbalances and the dangers of being controlled by others as Brinker purposely carries on the claim that Gene purposely jounced the branch in order to get his own dorm room which Gene claims that Brinker “rides a joke longer than anybody I[he] knows”(89). This means that Brinker purposely kept on bringing up Gene’s situation with Finny in order to extract information inhumanely, and that Gene was aware. Additionally, the trial in the Assembly Hall where Brinker continues to dominate over Gene, pushing him to falsely confess to a crime he did not commit, highlights the cruel and ruthless nature of manipulation and the lack of empathy that can exist within individuals in which Gene describes him as “enjoying this… imagining himself Justice incarnate… but also blind folded”(168).
After Finny’s leg is broken and he is in the hospital Gene comes over and they are talking about how Finny could have fallen. Finny considered that it could have been Gene’s fault but thinks he is crazy for thinking that. The people at school don't suspect a thing and think that Gene was just a bystander. Gene and Finny’s relationship isn't real but Finny thinks it is and doesn't think that Gene is bad at all or that he is jealous of him.

The main character has it implanted in his mind that he’s the talk of the school, of students, and teachers, and is tricking his emotions into making him feel bad because he knows the clothes he wears are bad. The author, Soto however, tries to explain that it is merely the boys thoughts of how much he hates the jacket that are messing with his mind. Soto says, “Although they didn’t say out loud, “Man, that’s ugly,” I heard the buzz-buzz of gossip, and even laughter that I knew was meant for me.” Soto is saying that the main character’s own thoughts are the main enemy that drives the main action in the story. Because of his thoughts, and his embarrassment, he becomes the reason his grades drop, the reason his friends abandon him.

He changed his name when he turned 16 because he did not want to have any connection with his abusive father. He also dropped out of school when he was 16 but he later got his GED later in life.
When Donny is performing poorly at school, the school contacts his parents to attend a conference to discuss Donny’s behavior. Tyler portrays irony with the character of Donny’s mother, Daisy, as Daisy herself is a former school teacher, so it is ironic that her child is failing at school as she should know better than other parents how best to help her child succeed academically. What Wilkins meant by saying “non standard person” would mean “being just like everyone else”, the same color, same background, same culture, same beliefs and same prejudices. after getting acclimated, and accepted, I think that Wilkins would still feel “non standard” because of that time in history, and the being the only black kid in the school and new to the town.
