The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. The American Dream was first publicly defined in 1931. James Truslow Adams used the quote in his book. He said, "The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement." The American Dream is in the Declaration of Independence. It stated that all men are equal. Also it said that people have the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Perry never finished high school but he did earn his GED. Perry was on Oprah Winfrey’s show before and he was motivated to take up writing. After he wrote a journal it was adapted into a musical called, I Know I’ve Been Changed. Over 15 years the ticket and merchandise sales netted him close to 150 million dollars. After, all this recognition led him to making movies such as Diary of a Mad Black Woman which was the start of his famous Madea character. Some critics do not like Tyler Perry but no one can stop his work from succeeding.

Chris Gardner retold his life story in the movie The Pursuit of Happiness. Gardner was raised by his single mother. As a young man, he was forced away from his home due to a bad relationship with his mother and her boyfriend who was abusive. Bob Bridges, a stockbroker, offered to help Gardner with interviews for training programs at some of the largest brokerage houses in New York. Gardner was the accepted into a training program at E.F.
