“Typologies of Terrorism” assist in combating terrorism by identifying and targeting specific types of terrorist motives, ideologies, and actions in order to combat and prevent future attacks. Although the categorization of terrorism does ease combatting terrorism, the definition continues to be ambiguous.
I will try to explain why language and defining terrorism is the most important strategy to counter domestic terrorist, specifically focusing on the issue of hate crimes.
The first step to combatting terrorism is creating a coherent definition, not only for the safety of the country, but also for the protection of the individual American. Both definitions state that an act of terrorism is “unlawful, and “danger to human life,” Making the same implications that were stated in the definition of a hate crime. The definitions of terrorist acts and hate crimes begin to differentiate when addressing the motives and intentions. As defined, hate crimes are crimes are fully motivated by prejudice, and terrorist acts by political and social objects. With an understanding of those two motivations, it can be argued that terrorism and hate crimes are the same.
According to the theory of political obligation (moral duties of citizens to obey the law of their state) crimes against race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or disability, are moral, political and social objections, because these segments of society are protected throughout the constitution.
