The mission statement is, “1480 WCNS is a fulltime community radio station providing Entertainment, Information and Public Service for 276,000 persons in our primary coverage area,”(About, n.d.). WCNS does an excellent job living their mission through providing entertainment with music, sports, and contest, information with news, weather and updates and public service through providing free coverage to non-profit and charity organizations. I also believe that students with mental health problems were excluded because they will not give an accurate answer. 2. The book provides strategies for the student to enhance their personal lives to in turn improve upon their mental health. At the beginning of the chapter, the book discusses the importance of relationships with others and the effects it has on a personal level. It reminds the reader of tips and tricks to keeping their relationships healthy. Some of these tips include being a good listener, be conscientious of nonverbal messages, and overall be an open person in both conversation and in body language.
Mental illnesses have a high prevalence amongst the United States population. Each year, tens of millions of individuals suffer and are affected by mental illnesses (National Institute of Mental Health, 1). These illnesses range from anxiety disorder, eating disorders, major depression, personality disorder, and many more. Yet, with the existing knowledge, mental providers and professionals, and the DSM-5, mental illness remains a growing mystery to the public. Literature has played a significant role in how mental illnesses are defined, their characteristics, and the portrayal of those who are mentally ill to the public eye.
BACKGROUND Knowing the background of the job of interest not only provides an upper hand but an idea of what type of atmosphere it has been throughout the years. Knowing the history, key individuals, purpose statement and values, and mission statements can sometimes persuade applicants to apply for a job with the institution. Encountering this information has become much easier with the use of the internet and search engines. History “Texas A&M University and Prairie View A&M University were first founded as land-grant colleges in 1876,” years later the A&M system was established in 1948 by the Texas Legislature.
We can support college students' mental wellness by moving away from a narrow perspective on mental illness and individual accountability and toward a wider, more comprehensive strategy that considers the societal and systemic factors that add to mental health issues. To achieve this, it's necessary to address structural disparities and systematic obstacles, offer a variety of resources and supports for students, and foster a school culture that prioritizes wellbeing and self-care. Depression is the number one mental illness on college campuses, something that many people do not know. The stress that college students are placed under can cause depression and other mental health issues, such as anxiety, eating disorders, self harm, and other clinical mental health conditions. The majority of college campuses have counseling centers for students who need them, but they are underused due to social stigmas against seeking help. A PSA consisting of a thirty second video and a poster was created, using the influential psychological principles of social proof, similarity, vividness, high controlling language, and scarcity. The goal of this PSA is to inform people about the prevalence of depression and other mental health conditions
The number of young people experiencing mental health difficulties is on the increase. Statistics show that more than one in two young people will present with some form of mental disorder by the time they reach the age of 24 (Cannon et al. 2013). Good mental health is fundamental to the ability of young people to remain healthy and to enjoy their lives. It enables them to develop and succeed, to participate in and contribute to society. Over the past decade mental health has come to the forefront of public consciousness.
According to an author for the American Psychological Association, Kirsten Weir, stress impacts the production of hormones and the functioning of the immune system (Weir). A recent study conducted by Emory University School of Medicine found that the inflammatory immune response, impacted by stress, “has also been linked to a variety of bodily ills, from diabetes and heart disease to depression” (Weir). Margot Putukian, a member of the NCAA Education Outreach, has noticed the impacts of stress on student-athletes and believes the primary concerns, regarding the prevalence of mental illness within the population of student-athletes, are the effects mental illness brings to their success in academics, athletics, and their general well-being (Putukian). Balancing the demands of being an athlete and a student places a large amount of pressure on the individual. This balancing act leads to many health issues affecting student athletes across many components of their life
Student affairs professionals should play a lead role in “organizing and presenting training opportunities and promoting the community responsibility of heightened awareness” (Jablonski, 2008, p.11). Awareness training opportunities should begin to be presented during orientation and continuously offered to students, parents, faculty and staff (Holloway et al., 2009, p. 20). Part of the awareness should be in making students to be part of preventive measures. Jablonski (2008) argues that “students should be considered and trained to recognize signs of distress in fellow students” (p.2).
To bridge the gap, the underlying mental illnesses that are not addressed cause more significant damage to others which results in more mental illnesses. The access to care and treatment is limited to Natives which is what I want to change. Currently, most Native Americans cannot seek adequate treatment due to economic barriers, they cannot pay for doctors or subsequent pills. Additionally, access to mental health services can be limited due to location, health insurance and the lack of awareness. By going to Dartmouth I hope to expand these ideas of mental health awareness because it’s results could be an increase in Natives finishing high school and college creating a more educated generation.

Health classes should take more of an initiative to put out the idea of mental health awareness and why it's important. At Pickerington High School North, a health class credit is mandatory for all students to to graduate. In this class, mental illness was talked about for a week or two total and mainly focused on the most over commonly known illnesses. For example, depression, anxiety, and anorexia. They didn’t even touch base on the The spectrum needs to be broadened.
Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
