During the period of discrimination and the civil rights movement persistence was key. By resisting to all the discrimination the African Americans showed a sense of rebellion which helped the civil rights movement to advance. In “Letter From Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr, Mlk defends his stand in the civil rights movement due to clergymen doubting his actions. In “Graduation” by Maya Angelou, Angelou shows differences between races and presents how her graduation was different due to the time period. “A Homemade Education” by Malcolm X shows how he expanded his knowledge while he was in jail by reading and using his time wisely.
There are many choices that we had to make to write these two pieces. First, I needed to decide on what other work I wanted to use to base my writing off of. I ended up choosing “Four Skinny Trees” from The House On Mango Street and “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. I also needed to figure out what figurative language I needed, and wanted to use. Lastly, I needed to figure out my over arching theme.
She was reading angry at her brother because he destroys the family making the parent suffer emotional and mental. She explains how the brother addiction turns her house outside down with this attitude. However, the brother addiction makes the parents to never give up on him even though his negative behavior toward them. Parents love him unconditional because it was their son. Even though he was not on the best path, they still support him and be on his side because they believe that he can change.
You mean to tell me it took World War II for women of color, black women to get decent jobs; finally “get out of the white folks’ kitchens.” “Defense industry jobs were reserved for whites only.” 355 Their services had to be in high demand in order to even help “our” country in this fight for “freedom” and the whole time, we’re still fighting for equality. And, women were lucky to get jobs in the defense industry only after men were “dried up.” 357 People of color were still being denied and/or discriminated against even after President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802.
Once again, Maya Angelou manages to touch our hearts again with her poetic skills in Chapter 19 titled The Champion of the World in her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She recalls a time in her life where the African American community gathered at her grandmother's and uncle's store to hear a boxing match via radio. The boxing match was between the former champion Joe Louis and a white boxer. Maya Angelou takes the meaning of a simple boxing match into something more complex; she demonstrates the suffrage of her people fighting against oppression during that time period.
In the story “Fences” there is a family who usually keep to themselves. It is the time when racial tensions were high. From the outside of the house if you did not know what was going on seemed normal ,but inside was different. Cory, the only son in the house felt as if his father was a lurking shadow walking in the house.
Cady Stanton and Maya Angelou “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (John C. Maxwell). Cady Stanton who wrote Declaration of Sentiments and Maya Angelou who wrote On the Pulse of the Morning are two different people; one is fighting for rights people need, while the other one is alive and wants people to enjoy life. They talk about separate ideas, and they also discuss what people need versus how they need to enjoy life. Angelou and Stanton are different in their beliefs; Stanton fought for women's rights, and Angelou wanted people to know how beautiful one’s life can be. Doctor Maya Angelou and Cady Stanton used freedom in different ways; Angelou wanted everybody to enjoy life and the freedom of life.
Their characteristics of their actions and words show the relationship that these people have within their families. And it was not a caring-and-love one family relationship. They let their tradition tear family apart, which they can stop if they are willing to do it. Throughout reading this short story, it informs the audiences that each individual character in this story have similar characteristics--loneliness-- except children, who does not fully understand family bonds. This story also shows their appearance of selfishness.
In Maya Angelou’s “Graduation” she spoke about a fictional character named Marguerite Johnson and her eighth-grade graduation. Marguerite was always kinda of lost and selfish at times, and never look at how others seen things. But as the story goes on Marguerite starts to find herself and understand others. “Graduation” isn’t just about how Marguerite pass on to the next grade but how she has grown from a lost girl to a young intelligence woman. In this story the reader is going to follower her on this surprising journey.
Characters from the novel come from different family backgrounds, but they all struggle with issues related to their families. This theme is still relatable today, as many people around the world are struggling with issues in their family such as divorce, abuse and being neglected. Context/Purpose/Audience Still I Rise, written in 1978 by African American poet and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou, is a resoundingly courageous and unearthing poem with an inspiring invited reading directly related to the time period it was written in: during the declaration for Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The poem discusses an African American woman’s struggles against racism and hatred from the society. It consists of nine-stanzas, offering words of inspiration to those who have been oppressed. It sends a message of hope that even in the midst of adversity it is possible to overcome obstacles and find the inner strength and confidence to rise above them. This poem is very straightforward making the message more meaningful and affective.
Marguerite went through a terrible time in her life so detrimental to her that she didn 't talk, Not a single word. As marguerite grew and got older she lived that way without any words, regardless of who tried to help her. Although Marguerite was remarkably intelligent and a notably nice girl she chooses to block the world out instead because it was easier. Maya Angelou better known as Marguerite in the short story “Mrs.Flowers” has been through a traumatic assault in her young age. Marguerite has shut many people out, until she has a discussion with Mrs.Flowers who shows her that shutting people out is not how you handle situations you do not want or know how to deal with.

This woman of African American origin wrote and published seven autobiographies that were very popular and highly-evaluated in the US. However, she is well-known not only for being an author but also for being an actress, poet, dancer, and screenwriter. And of course we must not forget activism in the field of civil rights conducted by Maya.

In the poem, the speaker shows the suffering of Africa by personification, imagery, and wordplay to result that Africa is moving forward to regain herself to give us all the world has done to Africa. The speaker is a knowledgeable person who is passionate and knows well about Africa. The poem takes the setting of Africa and in the time period around the 1400s - 1500s. The poem is an ABAB pattern with three stanzas.
‘Still I Rise’ by the American, Maya Angelou presents the character of a black woman who is oppressed in the 1970s but refuses to accept this. ‘Disabled’ by Wilfred Owen, however, is concerned with a character who is ‘broken’ after the disabilities he suffers in the First World War at the beginning of the twentieth century. The poem ‘Still I Rise’ is about a woman who discloses that she will overcome anything due to her self-confidence. The line ‘But still, like dust, I’ll rise’ is a metaphor that expresses that she will not be downtrodden by others.
