The symbol of the Precious Umbrella in Buddhism represents the shadow of protection. It is one of the eight Auspicious symbols. It’s function is to protect from the heat rather than the rain. The coolness of its shade symbolizes protection from the heat of suffering, desire, and other spiritually harmful forces.When an umbrella is held above a person's head it naturally symbolizes honour and respect. That is why when you see images of the Buddha, most of the time an umbrella is above his head. The precious umbrella also symbolises the activity of preserving people from illness, harmful forces, obstacles in this life and all kinds of temporary and enduring sufferings. In Europe, until a few decades ago, sunshade was a symbol for women in
