“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” for Wordsworth Classics written by Harriet Beecher Stowe is a book with heavy religious ideas. Mrs. Stowe also indicates discord of slavery with the Christian ethic of love and tolerance and spreads the basic Christian messages all the time.

The main character of this book, Uncle Tom, is a slave and a devout Christian. However, this does not ease the conflicts with slavery and Christianity. Men who are rich treat slaves as property but not human beings. At the beginning of the book, Mr. Shelby plans to trade slaves with Mr. Haley to pay back his debts. What’s worse, the aim of Mr. Haley is exactly the most obedient slave, Tom, of Mr. Shelby. In contrast, Mrs. Shelby, who is a Christian, casts serious doubt on selling Tom
