The Underground Railroad Have you ever wondered what kinds of codes were used in the Underground Railroad? Or the way experiences affected the slaves? Or what Harriet Tubman did? Well in this paper each of these questions will be answered. There were many secret ways people would talk about the Underground Railroad using codes or names. The way each slave went through this was different and each have their own experiences getting help. The most famous conductor was Harriet Tubman because she was known by all and was a big part of helping slaves escape. One code that was commonly used was a station as in train station (Underground Railroad). A station was known as a safe place and a temporary safe house where they could stay until the next night. Another code is a conductor (Underground Railroad), who was usually in charge of a specific train. The conductor was a person that would directly take slaves from place to place during the night which was the safest. The final one that will be discussed is Heaven (Did quilts play part…). She was given a special name that was referenced to the bible (Underground Railroad). She was known as Moses because she would take people to the “Promised Land”. She would dress as a slave when helping escape others so she could blend in with them (Nofi). She would say” We got to be free or die!”. Harriet was wanted by many slave owners that they would even offer a great reward for her capture (Nofi). Most people could never know if the tales told about Harriet Tubman were true or not because back then no one could really tell the difference between a fact and a
