Schooled by Gordan Korman is about a boy named Capricorn Anderson who learns about that there are friends to back you up, friendship and reveals that you shouldn’t be pushed around because your friends are always there to stand up for you. Capricorn Anderson is not an average 13 year old. He has never had any friends or been to school with others. He was homeschooled all his life with his hippie grandmother, Rain. All he had was Rain, but when Rain breaks her hip, Capricorn has to go live with the Donnellys and go to C Average Middle School.
To begin, Irony in the form of dark humor is used to convey a postmodern concept in the movie “Stranger than Fiction”, and the short story “The Happy Man”. Ironically, in “Stranger than Fiction” the perspective of a narrator and character are reversed. Characters in a novel are commonly oblivious of their narrative. However, Harold Crick is conscious that someone is narrating his life; therefore, he takes certain steps to avert his unfolding fate. On the contrary, narrators are generally omniscient, but Kay Eiffel, the novelist, is entirely unaware of her creation’s realism.
All writers have their own unique style and use many different devices to grab and keep the reader's attention. Writers also use their writing styles and topics to target their intended audience. Some writers such as Leonard Pitts Jr. decide to create editorial pieces based on controversial topics on the uprise. Rhetorical Analysis Essay Many customs can be depicted as unusual if observed by someone outside of the traditional society. Within the United States many cultural practices found in other regions are considered peculiar. American culture boasts traditions and customs that can be considered idiosyncratic by other societies. In "Body Rituals Among the Nacirema," Horace Miner effectively conveys his message through the use of irony and sarcasm.
Writers use strategies in personal essays to make a connection to readers. Even though readers aren’t necessarily right next to the writer, writers write their personal essays as if the reader were there. They are able to reveal their deepest thoughts within their writing, as readers can relate to it. Phillip Lopate states the importance of strategies in his anthology, “The Art of the Personal Essay.” In his anthology, Lopate mentions that the use of strategies used in personal essays are similar; however, those strategies can portray different themes that the author doesn’t state.
The tone of authors throughout the world varies greatly based on their intentions for writing. In the case of Anthem, author Ayn Rand invents a dystopian society in which collectivism is promoted in great favor over individualism. One character, however, pushes the boundaries and embraces a sense of independence. Rand likely desired audiences to take her views presented in her novel into consideration. Accordingly, for the purpose of creating a serious relationship with its readers, Anthem adopts a reverent tone by utilizing formal language and addressing critical subjects.
According to The Maker 's Eye by Donald M. Murray, there are seven elements of the writing process that we must surpass to consider ourselves an acceptable writer. Murray states, that when a competent writer review/revises his or her writing, they are typically searching for seven key elements: Subject, Audience, Form, Structure, Development, Dimensions, and Tone. (131-132). We can conclude from this that it is vital for us as writers to take into consideration all seven elements; as they are all essential for the health and satisfaction of the manuscript. I find learning through others eyes a very useful and nesting manor of educating. Throughout my twenty plus years of employment, I’ve found learning becomes most impactful and resonates more for me, when I see through others eyes. David Foster Wallace uses a combination of rhetorical literary devices and modes of persuasion to convince his audience, Kenyon College’s graduating class, that in their adult life it is not only important, but necessary to look past themselves and view the world without themselves at the center. If they do not do so, it will cause them daily misery and pain when having to interact with people when they are tired or bored. Wallace is able to persuade his audience by first gaining credibility with them, so they are more willing to listen to what he has to say. Then, he uses logical reasons as to why they should not put themselves above others in their lives, and solidifies the lesson through emotional appeals that most of the class can relate to and use to grow from. Throughout his speech he uses a variety of rhetorical tools to persuade the audience further, such as his use of anaphora, and syntax in the way he presents his ideas.
Essayist and Novelist David Foster Wallace, in his speech, “This is Water,” defends the true purpose of a liberal arts education, and emphasizes the necessity of thinking the right way in life. Wallace attempts to create a humble, personal tone through the use of informal diction, ethical appeals, and personal encounters in order to connect with his audience and shift them to see that they are not alone in this struggle, and they must prevail in order to truly be “living.” Wallace’s argument is successful due to the implementations of this tone, ethical appeals, and repetition of purposeful phrases. Wallace’s informal or low diction is shown through the use of words such as, “finger wagging,” “bullshit,” and, “god-damn people.” The effect of these words is the creation of a laid back, personable tone that ensures the audience does not feel like Wallace is “preaching” to them or giving them “moral advice.”

By the end of the novel, Mason decides once again to put his brother’s need before his own since he decides to stay with whereas he had to opportunity to go to college. In Tex and the Outsiders, Hinton redefines the concept of the family. The Curtis decided to extend their family with the Greasers and the McCormick brother form a family without the presence of their parents.
Kurt Vonnegut author of slaughterhouse five, in the 1985 essay “How to Write with Style,” makes observations and recommendations for infusing personality into your work. It begins by defining "elements of style" as the unique personal qualities that you show to the reader. Vonnegut then goes on to make an argument on why we should improve our writing style. To which he says it's out of sign of respect for the reader. Basically not putting effort into your writing will make the reader will think that you care little of them.
For example, it was expressed in his repeated addresses to readers. His choice of words, like “do we really expect to stay afloat… [or] our fault lies not so much with our economy” (Fridman), shows the author does not try to blame other peoples, while admits all parts of the society, including “nerds and geeks”, should participate in the problem solving. The emotional appeal appears from the beginning of the text, as it was mentioned above. “There is something very wrong with the system of values in a society that has only derogatory terms” (Fridman), the author starts with the expression of his negative opinion about the situation. He uses the essay to flip reader to his side.
