In the U.S, we have had many different social movements in other to ensure everyone can have the same rights and to end discrimination against groups. These groups are just about social change and trying to move society forward. This paper will discuss the social movement pertaining to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Rights Movement using Duncan social identity model of collective action which consist of three variables such as “injustice, efficacy, and identity”. I will like focus on the understanding the movement such as the Supreme Court process, how they were able to increase more involvement, and how they were able to maintain their social identity within the movement. It took many years, for the movement to make progress and getting the results they wanted.
Many individuals do not understand what exactly what the LGBT rights movement pertains to. Therefore, it’s some times misconception as just pertaining to rights for marriage. In addition, people just call it the gay movement. According to Boundless, it’s a movement that “attempts of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender advocates to improve the legal and social status of LGBT people. Historically, LGBT people have faced prejudice and discrimination” (2015). The first variable in Duncans’ model shows how the movement try to come together collective to combat the injustice that individuals are facing. The movement is to help to ensure that injustice against individuals that identity as LGBT are not discriminated against when it comes to housing, employment, justice system, and etc. The movement is a collective of individuals who are facing the same harsh realities of discrimination. The NOh8 campaign that involved celebrity participated helped to get the issue out to the world more. The NOH8 campaign is a silent protest against those that do not support equality when it comes to same sex relations. The actions that celebrities took for the movement help to get my results. The use of celebrities in the campaign can be see as social capital. The campaign use of the celebrities helped to promote the inequality of same sex relations more, which help grabbed more attention for the movement. Getting more individuals that are high profile involved help to change how the campaign was looked upon in the media. The Argument that Duncan applies using Klandermans (1984) argument can also be similar to how celebrities can change the efficacy of the movement. For instance, Dunce mention something important in Klandermans argument such as “that on the individual level, a key aspect of the cost/benefit analysis was an evaluation of the effectiveness of a particular action” (Duncan,7).
