Millions of families have immigrated into the United States since its founding. One such family was the Macaluso/Cusimano family. This family of Sicilians lived in Italy for three generations, until immigrating into the United States in 1894. Though they did not lead exciting, politically important, lives, they left their mark through an enormous bloodline whose oldest known source is Vincenzo Cusimano. His descendants, Dane Crosby being a member of the latest generation, went on, and continue to live on, to lead fruitful lives.
Families serve as children's principal settings for cultural and racial transmission, serving as their primary crucible for socialization, “What it all comes down to is that the family is the unit of cultural preservation. This is true for all families, but for immigrants, it is particularly bittersweet; to do one thing means something else is excluded” (Lee). Lee says that she felt lost at times for not knowing about her family's history before migrating to the United States, "Because our parents never spoke about Korea, we felt as if we’d landed in the middle of the Iron Range of Minnesota via spaceship" (Lee), and for not practicing the culture of their country of origin, “They (author’s parents) insisted that we were not Koreans or even Korean-Americans, but Americans”
While in Vietnam, he had sexual relations with many prostitutes, and contracted gonorrhea. While angered, he did not stop having relations with prostitutes. Back at home, his wife was having an affair as well, and their marriage ended within a
They come from rural areas, have few job skills, and speak little English (Everyculture.com/Cambodian-Americans/Acculturation and Assimilation). Younger Cambodians struggle with identity problems and there is often a division between the younger and older generations (Everyculture.com/Cambodian-Americans/AcculturationandAssimilation). A good number of Cambodian American families are headed by female which is a contributor to their poverty (Everyculture.com/Cambodian-Americans/Family and Community Dynamics). It is hard to say which group had the most difficult time overcoming obstacles. Many of them had just wanted to better the lives of their families and thought they could do so in America.
By doing this, Americans have made Indians feel alienated and alone in their own homeland. Sometimes we forget that the Indians were here first and we forced them from their own land. Jackson
Although none may have wanted to flee from their home country, they did so under necessity, and were able to find a home in a completely foreign country to them. The differences in culture between the Hmong and Western cultures were distinct, but the Hmong were still able to practice their own traditions and aid each other in their time of need, such as when Paja needed the communal help. They overcame struggles together, and in the end, were able to keep their culture, though the Hmong children are also embracing the
Hmong children were going to school and learning the way American children did, meaning that they had a better understanding of the way society functioned, causing them to be the most likely member of their family to get a job. Having a job meant that they were the providers for the family, but this was very different from the way Hmong families lived while in their native country. The Hmong experienced many difficult situations in America, but “of all the stresses in the Hmong community role loss…may be the most corrosive to the ego” (206). In American society, having an education is one of the most powerful things someone can have, and being literate is something that is highly valued in society. Unfortunately for older Hmong people, they could not get an education, and learning English was an

While family structure has changed dramatically since the 1950’s, what current changes are we seeing; and how is it affecting the roles to which we play in a compromising world. In the 1950’s families consisted of a head of household (the Father), the house wife (or mother); and their offspring (the children). The father’s duty was to bring home the bacon, while making end meets for his family, while the wife stayed home and cared for the children, the elderly; and took on the household duties. These families usually lived in the suburbs, where they raised their children; while teaching them the proper ways of life. During this time in history, young women were expected to find a mate through persuasion, then get hitched; and eventually produce an offspring.
Family theories have been used throughout the history of nursing to help guide patient care and provide the best patient outcomes. Certain theories may be more applicable to the specific patient encounter; however, each theory has benefits and drawbacks to their use. The purpose of this paper is to examine two selected theories, comparing their strengths and weaknesses. I will also discuss a theoretical family in relation to one theory, and how that theory can be best integrated into the care provided by an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). Description of Theories
Introduction In this case study, it analyse how the concept of family has changed in the past 20 years as it will be depicting modern family forms and past norms. It is important to look at how families have developed throughout the years up until the 21st century as we compare the two and elaborate on the difference and what makes it so significant. Secondly, the main ideas of functionalism will be discussed followed by how this theory perceives the family. The main ideas of Conflict Theory will then be examined and how conflict theorists perceive the family.

I believe that every family has their own roots, essence, uniqueness, beliefs and thoughts, some families have both parents, some just the mother, just the father, two mothers or two fathers, they might have an only child or two, or maybe 5 or even 10, therefore, those children start learning all these things from their family and surroundings, they ask questions, they imitate each other’s actions and are constantly learning and trying to catch as much information and experiences as possible. Children are growing fast, their parents are their role models, they learn mostly from them; parents have the tremendous job of forming good citizens that provide to society, healthy and happy beings that keep growing as humans in every stage of their
