Unhappy Characters In The Outsiders

The Outsiders Character Essay Most teenagers in today’s world are stereotyped to be “unhappy”, some because of family or money and sometimes even certain relationships. But Darry and Randy are both unhappy because of other people’s decisions. The main character Ponyboy, which is Darry’s younger brother, made some bad choices that led to worse outcomes. Both Darry and Randy had to also suffer because of Ponyboy’s choices. Ponyboy and his friends do not get along with another friend group, the Socs. Some of Ponyboy’s friends and himself made some bad choices and it led to bad consequences. That included death, court sessions, and losing some of his best friends. After they settled it with what they call a “rumble”, Ponyboy went back to school and started lacking motivation in all his classes. His English teacher encouraged him to write his English paper on something life-changing, and things began to change. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. “Randy was supposed to be too cool to feel anything” (116). He is part of the “Soc” friend ground. Almost all Socs were considered “cool”. “Randy pulled out a cigarette and pressed in the car lighter.” (115) Several of the characters in the book smoked and thought it was cool to do so. Randy was “cool” because he was smoking. “I’m sick and tired of all of this. Sick and tired.” (116). Randy was tired of everything that was going on, following the death of his best friend. He wanted it all to come to a stop. “Randy was supposed to be too cool to feel anything, and yet there was pain in his eyes.” (116). Even though everyone thought he looked cool on the inside, deep down on the inside he was in a lot of pain from the passing of his best friend.
