THESIS PAGE Sequence On January 31, 1986, Unique RaQuel-Leona Harris was born in Richmond, Virginia, where she eventually had two sons. In 2010, she moved into an apartment in Washington, D.C. Five weeks after moving in, 24-year-old Unique Harris was reported missing from the apartment, leaving her young boys behind (Trace Evidence). After nearly eight years, no one has reported seeing Unique again. This sudden disappearance wasn’t anticipated by any of Unique’s family or peers. Based on my understanding of the evidence I researched, I believe Unique was more than likely a victim of foul play. Despite the evidence of her personal belongings and satisfaction with life, some argue that Unique Harris was not a victim of foul play and that she intended to leave willingly. This argument is supported by the lack of evidence found by the detectives. During the investigation of the case, no suggestions of forced entry were identified (Good). Opposers of my theory would debate that Unique should’ve left some form of evidence behind if foul play is a relevant factor. However, to disprove the opposing theory, I am acknowledging the condition of the apartment Unique was residing in. Unique was renting out an apartment in the 2400 block of Hartford Street SE. According to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Data Map, there were 73 violent crimes reported within 1500 feet of this block in 2010 alone. This proves that the neighborhood is in an unsafe area with a high crime rate. Unique, herself, reported witnessing a murder from her apartment window (Capretto). This may prove that she didn’t feel safe in the neighborhood. Even Unique’s mother, Valencia Harris, stated that the apartment complex wasn’t secure. Specifically, she said that Unique’s apartment door was in a “battered state” prior to her moving into the complex (Jones). This implies that Unique’s disappearance wasn’t the only incident that occurred at her apartment.
