Unit 37 - Understanding Business Ethics Introduction For this assignment, the business I have chosen to talk about is Tesco’s. Tesco PLC is a British and Irish grocery and general merchandise retailer. The company is the third largest retailer in the world measured by profits yet it is the ninth-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. It has stores in 12 countries across Asia and Europe and is the grocery market leader in the UK, with a market share of 28.4% approximately as the company today has over 3500 stores all of which help employee 310,000 people. This strategic move was made as the company wanted to appeal to many different social groups. However, another reason could be that some accusations of animal cruelty could arise as some of the general public may believe the conditions an animal is made to live is cruel and unsanitary. Health problems 1. In the UK, there are many laws and regulations that Tesco’s must adhere too to ensure that they do not get fined. One of these laws being that stores can stock and sell alcohol and tobacco as long as the tobacco is not on show and that the consumer must be over the age of 18 to buy both alcohol and cigarettes. This can be seen as an ethical problem as these products have been proven to be associated with having life-changing health concerns such as cancer, alcohol poisoning or COPD. These health issues are often exaggerated by the products gruesome packaging as it indicated to the consumer what can happen to their lungs if they smoke to much.
