The meeting was to review the revised Birth Center Remodel plans and determine points of access and security levels.
1. Review the updated plans and discussed security concerns.
a. There are multiple entrances in the hospital. Elevators by NICU units will have control access. Screening public coming via main elevators the birth center unit was concerned.
b. Currently, visitors are not screened at night, and there isn’t a budget for future. Potentially, a night shift scrub tech. can screen visitors.
c. There are occasions when there isn’t anyone in nurse station.
d. It was discussed if there is a system notifying staff when public / visitors present in the main lobby.
2. Recommendations.

All elevators to 3rd floor to have access control. ii. Chuck S also indicated that most of Dignity Health facilities have visitor access control system to their birth center. iii. Jim xx indicated that new access control system for the hospital have a visitor control function, which is an enhancement. Visitors and patients need to be directed to main greeting station (24 hours) to sign-in and receive access. Distinguished access cards for visitors/patients can be issued for visual identification. These cards need to be collected upon discharging or leaving the hospital. iv. Chuck S confirmed that it is feasible and can be implemented.
v. Additional staff training will be required to control public who would follow staff / visitors with access to elevators. vi. Chuck S recommended to keep existing double egress doors at corridors and have them on hold open. It is to provide a flexibility to secure smaller units in the future. vii. Chuck S recommended to change the existing double egress doors connecting to new hospital pavilion to a double doors.
c. Escorting visitors/patients to NICU and directional signage are expected.
