There are many internal and external factors that contribute to the success of the United States’ economic system. Some historians, such as Anthony Hopkins, reference the Empirical America due to the strong influential shadow it casts over various countries, yet still questions the legitimacy of the term. The United States’ economic success can be attributed to its’ strong government system and its’ relations with numerous countries. The country became the unipolar power of the world and held the top economy. The country was not only strong internally but was also the center for world trade. One of the earlier testaments for the US’ want for a free market is the GATT, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. This Agreement promoted international trade by eliminating certain barriers. Eventually GATT was replaced with the World Trade Organization in 1995, however, still promotes reduced tariffs. Trade is a central component for the US’ economy. The tension between the United States and the Soviet Union decreased as the United States surpassed the USSR in a more successful government model and economic status. The United States’ dominating status after the Cold War sent Third Wave of Democracy, in which communist governments or dictatorships were being overturned with a democratic system. The United States was a role model of change for many countries, and the US quickly helped create a government shift of communism and dictatorships to a democratic republic. One of the main examples of Third Wave Democracy is the government changes seen throughout the African
