Many Jewish people remained living outside of Palestine after the Persians authorized their return. They lived in many different customs with people that had a different way of life. This included Mesopotamia, Egypt, Asia Minor, and Europe (Tullock & McEntire, 2012). These conditions gave rise to opposing views.

This mix of different cultures presented two viewpoints. The particularist’s viewpoint was that the Jewish people should keep their culture/religion to themselves as a way to designate them and show a distinct difference between them and other cultures. The Universalists thought was quite different. These Jews felt that not only should their religion be shared among other cultures, but that they had a duty to share Judaism
