Love is not always fair. Some people love other people and the love is not returned or the love is given to another person. This is known as unrequited love. In A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, in the play Shakespeare examines how complicated love is.
One example of unrequited love is when Helena wants Demetrius but Demetrius keeps saying no. In the play it states
DEMETRIUS. Tempt not too much the hatred of my spirit; For I am sick when I do look on thee. HELENA. And I am sick when I look not on you.
