Sustainability has become a major issue with the animal production industry due to the unsustainable practices that take place. The current statistics for the percentage of methane produced by livestock is 16% (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2017). The 16% of methane produce by livestock is directly affecting the climate change. This statistic will continue to rise until adequate changes have been made to insure the methane produced from livestock decreases. It is necessary for this change to take place to insure future generations are able to survive using the land and changing environment.
Clearly the animal production industry is unstainable consequently the environment is affected. In return this will cause a change in the community and economy are. Livestock alone is producing 16% of greenhouse gas emissions however, there are numerous other steps in the animal production industry that are extremely unstainable and are putting a constant strain on the environment. Other minor contributors are: fossil fuels used for transporting the products, the electricity used for the processing plants, the feed used for the animals, storage, water for the animals and the land clearing used to provide space for the both the farming of the animals and the animal feed. Although these contributions are minor once added up they are a large …show more content…

Many new farming methods are far more expensive than and not as efficient as the traditional way of production. An example of a new farming method is adding a small amount of seaweed into the cattle’s feed, this has shown to produce far less greenhouse emissions however the cost of the seaweed is very expensive resulting in a more expensive final product. Therefore the new practices will not be efficient in producing large quantities of meat in a profitable
