The 1960-70’s was the height of the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were dedicated to gaining liberties which only whites could exercise freely, and did this was done through peaceful as well as violent means of protest. Individuals such as Martin Luther King protested by means of preaching peace and utilizing nonviolent actions against whites while others such as Malcolm x and elijah muhammad resorted to not only violence, yet separatism to protest and show their urge to gain civil Liberties. Though, both methods of protest were aimed towards the same goal, only one was to be influential and bring about the change that African Americans desire.
The 1960s was a difficult time for America. African-Americans were seeking to be become officially free and to secure the right to vote through the civil rights movement. The White Governor Wallace and his allies drew in every available resource to stem the tide of progress on segregation. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. being of colored skin, wanted to advance this progress to secure blacks their rights. The main issue was on whether to keep the statues que on segregation or change it for every human being has their rights.

The 1850’s to 1860’s was a crucial decade that had detrimental effects on the unity of the country. Many events agitated and aroused secession of the South from the North and divided the country in two. The country’s highly divided views between the Northerners and Southerners could no longer be mended, and Southern states could only see secession as the most viable option. The greatest controversy that ruptured the unity of the country were the opposing views on slavery; the events that occurred in this decade, as well as the fear that the Southerners had toward the potential abolition of slavery in America was enough for them to leave the union and is what lead to the bloody battle of the Civil War. As America continued to advance and flourish geographically and economically, the country began dividing itself between Southern states that supported and relied heavily on slave labor, and Northern states that were more opposed to slavery.

The growing contrast between urban and rural lifestyles led to a surge in religious fundamentalism. Those in rural america believed that city life was full of sin, materialism, and temptation — a veritable spiritual wasteland. Some of this disdain was driven by jealousy, but not all of it. Fundamentalism, although religious in origin, was first and foremost a conservative state of mind that served as a check on the liberal, city point of view. Fundamentalists considered discoveries, such as evolution, blasphemous, and that lead to the beginning of the battle over the inclusion of evolution in the classroom.
Gender roles were reasserted in 1950s America postwar. During the 1960s even though Blacks and White shared the same faith, they could not share the same church pew because of the racial barrier that was prevalent in that time between the two races. Churches have always been a safe place for Blacks and Whites to retreat to when needed, but they were never integrated. Blacks went to their churches, and Whites went to theirs. The church was one place where they could sit in peace surrounded by their fellow friends and family, and forget about the brutality happening right outside the doors. Since it was a safe haven the Blacks were not pushing for the churches to be integrated, and the Whites did not want their churches to be desegregated.
Before the 1950s, there were issues that were not formally addressed beforehand. It could be stated that people ignored the truth that “they would have to someday work in the fields to secure food.” The food is the equality that was given to them by divine rule. However, that equality was yet an illusion as there were minorities who cried for civil rights movements. Issues of white supremacy around the US surfaced around the mid 1950s and scuffles took place.
Unfortunately when there are changes made anywhere there may be resistance. Massive resistance is what it was called in the 1950’s which was a movement to resist the new racial laws like the Civil Rights Act that outlawed discrimination against color, race and sex. It was evident that changes were implemented by our president and congress that not only allowed African Americans freedom but the rights to be treated equally. They were now able to dine at a restaurant, attend schools with individuals of a different race. Unfortunately this caused a disturbance among the opposing parties which were mainly Caucasian individuals.
