Churchgoers usually never choose a church because of their political views but today there is tons division in churches because of it. In the podcast “The Evangelical Vote” by Lawrence Wu, the speakers explore how and why white evangelicalism has a strong connection with conservative political issues. In the episode “The Evangelical Vote” the speaker Ramtin Arablouei states “the reality was, while many white and black evangelicals shared similar theologies, they almost never worshipped together.” (0:17:05) because “they're explicitly excluded.(0:17:55) these quotes explain that the divide was not a doctrinal divide but instead a racial and political one. In fact, white and black evangelicals have the most in common in relation to any other Christian subgroups. The article “White Christmas, Black Christmas” by Robert Jones further explains the illogical divide today when evangelicals celebrate Christmas. The author states that they go to different churches “where they will hear the same stories, light the same Advent candles, and sing the same carols.” (Jones). The writer’s repetition of the word “same” creates emphasis on the two groups who are doctrinally the same but separated because of racial and political views. Though whites had the same beliefs as them they saw them as a threat to their churches and communities because of their difference of their skin color. This racial divide was run primarily by southern evangelical who had been slave owners and lost in the civil war not too many years before desegregation. In the article “Politics driving new divisions among Catholics and evangelicals.” the author explains that some evangelicals “prefer not to use the label "evangelical" in some circumstances because it has taken on greater political connotations.” (Baylor University). This quote sheds light to how the increase of politics in churches can poorly affect the connotation of the who believe in the same God and religious practices as another. Through the withholding of civil rights and liberties there is division amongst many churches all over the world.
