In the novel, “Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere” by Julie T. Lamana is about a 10 year old girl and her family and how they go through a severe hurricane. The book started out at their home and it was a couple days before the main character, Armani’s, birthday. On Armani’s birthday, a hurricane starts coming their way and they have to get ready as quick as possible. During the beginning of the storm, a family member passes away. They ended up stranded and they had to wait to be rescued while stressing about what is happening with the family members who jumped in the water. Armani ends up having to take care of her siblings while her mom goes to try and find a clinic. During this time, Armani learns multiple lessons that should help her later on in life. This novel takes place in the Lower Nines in New Orleans in 2005 and in the novel the family goes through a very massive, popular hurricane called Hurricane Katrina. Throughout the story, I recognized many strengths they have in common. I believe that Armani and her father are more alike than different. First, Armani and George are both brave and put others before themselves. For example, the father was constantly making sure the family was safe and tried to keep them calm. George wasn’t the only person who had to be brave during this natural disaster. Armani had to take care of her new dog and tried to keep her siblings calm. Armani came through and watched all of her siblings while her mom left to try and find a clinic and her dad went to try to help his family somewhere else. A difference that Armani and her father had was that her father was better at handling situations like this hurricane. George had to calm her and her family down when they were stressed. As you can tell, Armani and her father had many similarities than differences which helped them as they were dealing with
