Urban Ministry isn’t a subject that is often spoken in many communities. One would even ponder what does urban ministry mean. As a matter of fact, “people of color in the city also rarely define their ministries generically as “urban”, but for different reasons. It reminds me of one of the activities that occurs within the city of Memphis annually themed, Jesus Loves Memphis. Jesus Loves Memphis is an event started by Bellevue Baptist Church where many of the evangelical churches within Memphis come together in unity to do some incredible and exciting things in a lot of the neglected areas of our city. The activities would include things like cleaning up a community by picking up trash, blowing leaves, cutting grass, picking up old discarded tires on the side of the streets, painting a city park for the children, repairing homes for the elderly, tearing down an old building overlooked by the city, and last, but certainly not least, praying for our city and its leaders. The beforehand list is not all inclusive, as there are several other activities and events that takes place during the month of October for Jesus Loves Memphis. My point here is that there many communities come together within Memphis for one common goal, and that goal is unity and love. Those participating are not concerned at all by race, nationality, wealth or the lack of it. There are people of all races from many different economic and political backgrounds joining together in prayer and action to let Memphis know that their neighbor loves them and so does Jesus! It’s an amazing event to take part
