A Wizard of Earthsea is a young-adult science fiction novel which is written by an American writer, Ursula K. Le Guin. Le Guin tried to write an “original” book away from traditional novels, which are mostly written for kids which heroes are white men, women are a passive object, and wizards are old men with long beards and peaked hats, but this is a book for young people, therefore the main role should be given to a young man who change from a proud man to a great fame and power. Writing A Wizard of Earthsea was not easy because older kids read intensely as if their life rely on it and also people were used to read that heroes and good people were white and evil people were black. Le Guin successfully put Ged into magic through his aunt. Repeating his aunt's words of power without knowing their meaning, tells readers that Ged has an innate power that motivated his aunt to teach him what little she knew. In another aspect, this little magics encouraged Ged to beg to his aunt to teach him more because she taught him that magical words can “make a snail look out of its shell” and summon animals such as calling “a falcon down from the sky. Therefore, his hobbies changed; he wanted to learn how to change himselve to a bird. Their interactions went stronger when she promised to teach him the names if he “will not ever tell that word to the other children” because if everyone knows the words, they all be able to call the goats. Even though, on Gont, there was a saying, “weak as woman’s magic,” and the ignorance of the witch about Balance and Pattern, these little magics and experiences were the first steps to adjust the Ged’s life from a simple villiger to follow and hunt a shadow over oceans and lands “ to the lightless coasts of death’s kingdom”. Ged did not have full understanding about balance, so he studied magics beyond his age and ignoring the issue of balance. Ged introduced to a “ very dark skin” boy, vetch who became the best friend for Ged even they shared their “true names.” Vetch was in the novel for remarkable reasons. Vetch helps Ged to do all brilliant acts to be Ged. Also, Le Guin tried to alter the view that all black people are bad and evil. He brought a wizard who is black, but his color did not resist to become the most reliable person to Ged. Additionally, Ged encounters a long boy, Jasper who was the main rival of Ged. Quickly, they began a competition of showing their magician and innate power. The rivalry motivated Ged to cast a strong spell to “summon up a spirit from the dead,” but a shadow appeared that endangered his life and causing the dead of Nemmerla who wanted to recover the Balance. It shows that sometimes helping and rebalancing the world, needs lives and victomes. Also, It lays out the implicit moral responsibility of Nemmerla to keep equilibrium which can be unbalanced easily by a small acting if it is not done inappropriately.
