U.S. Constitution Preamble The US Constitution Article 1 Section 1. Congress, which contains both the Senate and the House of Representatives, holds legislative powers. Section 2. The people of the states choose House of Representative members every 2 years. The representatives must be of 25 years of age, must be a citizen of the US for 7 years, and must live in the State where he’s elected. The members of the House of Representatives are divided proportionally among the states according to size. The members choose the leader of the house. Section 3. The Senate is composed of 2 senators from each state. They serve for 6 years and each senator has one vote. All bills for raising money must start in the House. All bills must pass both houses of Congress in the exact same form. Either bills that passes are then sent to the president where he can sign the bill, which it than becomes a law, or he can veto it. If he veto’s a bill it is sent back to Congress and if both houses pass it by a two-third majority, the bill becomes a law. If the President does not veto or sign a bill, within 10 days it becomes a law without his signature. If Congress sends the bill to the President and they than adjourn, and the President doesn’t sign the bill within 10 days, it doesn’t become a law. Section 8. Congress has the power to collect taxes, borrow money on credit of the US, regulate trade with foreign nations, coin money, fix the standards of weights and measures, provide the punishment for counterfeiting money, establish post offices and post roads and declare war. Congress also has the power to pass any law deemed necessary and proper. Section 9. Congress cannot prohibit the importation of any Persons but may impose a tax on importation not exceeding ten dollars. Suspension of habeas corpus isn’t allowed, and ex post facto laws are prohibited. No law can give preference to one state over another. No money can be taken from the treasury except by duly passed law, and the government shall establish no title of nobility, such as Prince or Marquis. Section 10. The President, Vice President and other civil officers can be impeached for crimes of treason, bribery, or other wrongdoings. Article III Section 1. The judicial power is held by the Supreme Court. Judges of both the supreme and inferior courts have good behavior will they hold office. They will also receive pay for their duties. Section 2. Federal courts can decide cases involving federal law, disputes between different states, and disputes between residents of different states. The Supreme Court has original jurisdiction in cases involving ambassadors and other public ministers. All other cases are only heard if on appeal from lower courts. The accused has the right to a trial by jury. Section 3. A person can only be convicted of treason if there are two eyewitnesses of the act. The act of treason consists of raising war against the US or helping enemies of the US. Congress has the power to declare the punishment for treason but it cannot punish the relatives of the accused.
