The U.S. at the time in the 1960s was afraid of increasing communism values and ideals across the world and within the land. A war that lasted from November first, 1955 to April 30th, 1975, that showed a spread in communism was the Vietnam War. The rise of Vietnam brought about the fear of communism back into America. It focused on the conflict between North and South Vietnam. The U.S. gave its full support to South Vietnam in the hopes of getting rid of communism. U.S. policy not being in doubt by the public. Advances in video and audio recording give more news coverage. The U.S. was respected during this for its fight against communism. It started with the fact that Japan was at war with Vietnam. Viet Minh was established to fight back against Japan by communist leaders. The moment Japan was defeated by the U.S. in world war two, Ho Chi Minh made Vietnam a free state on September 2nd, 1945. Ho Chi Minh's two goals were to have Vietnam have national independence and a communist-run country with no private ownership of land or industries. The Viet Minh and the French managed to make a compromise of Vietnam being a free state while being in the French Empire. This peaceful compromise didn’t last long as Vietnam declared a guerilla war on the French. The fear of communism spreading within Asia is what sent the U.S. into this war in 1950 that sent U.S. and United Nations troops. With rises in the new television, the U.S. could broadcast what was happening in the Vietnam War due to News Networks trying to gain viewer retention. This live footage showed America the real impacts of war. That war wasn’t just a patriotic way to support your country and democracy but a gruesome bloodbath that most people’s lives. War was questioned by the public after the Vietnam War was brought straight to their homes with the television. Pro-war supporters saw anti-war marches as disrespectful towards the soldiers in the war during that time. Ngo Dinh Diem had U.S. support and made South Vietnam into a democratic state. They just came from the Korean wars that they won and immediately soldiers are thrown into another war. New land U.S. soldiers never set foot on. Soldiers didn’t have a clear attack from Vietnam for the U.S. In many other wars, Americans who participated in the opposing countries often made an attack on the U.S. hurting American Citizens' pride like in World War Two the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. With no clear attack on the U.S. as a country then nobody could have empathy for the people fighting against Vietnam. It loses the interest of the American People. “Our presence there has always rested on this basic belief: The main burden of preserving their freedom must be carried out by them--by the South Vietnamese themselves,” (President Johnson). Freedom has to be made by South Vietnam but the U.S. This shows that the troops from America have little interest in the war because they want to make them control their own freedom.
