Through metaphors and personification during Friar Lawerence’s herb-picking scene, Shakespeare characterizes the Friar as a sensible and aware character. While the Friar is picking herbs, the Friar gives the herbs human-like characteristics, he also describes how the earth is where nature lives and where it dies, this metaphor, and personification reveals the Friar's character traits.

Many scholars consider Shakespeare the master of figurative language. In Romeo and Juliet, he uses different forms of figurative language to help create tension and add to the tragedy.
Metaphor “Peered forth the golden window of the east. ”(Act 1, Scene 1) Benvolio uses this metaphor when he is revealing the location of Romeo to the Montagues. He is comparing how the sun looks like a golden window. The sun is in the direction of East.
The theme of love is often associated with peace and kindness. However, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers’ suicidal impulse shows love as a cause of self-destructive violence, as seen through their thoughts, words and actions. Firstly, Romeo and Juliet’s suicidal thoughts reveal the violence caused by their love. In other words, it is their intense passion for each other that leads to their contemplation of suicide. For instance, when Romeo is told of Juliet’s supposed death, he immediately thinks of killing himself and begins to plan his suicide, as demonstrated by the following quote: “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight.

In the first Act of A Midsummer Night's Dream, main characters are introduced in a way that sets the tone for the rest of the play. Egeus' first speech, found on lines 23 to 46, is a perfect example of this; through his speech themes of domination and control, and his accusatory themes, he affirms the accepted positions of power of his time. People in this world lie all the time because they think that they are helping instead of telling the truth. When the truth comes out in the society people are more hurt than if a person just told the truth instead of lying. In William Shakespeare's, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet die from miscommunication between the characters, not fate.
In this passage, Shakespeare utilizes metaphor and negative diction to characterize Romeo as a person who is conflicted and frustrated by love, which ultimately reveals the theme that love is uncontrollable, conflicting, and short-lived. Towards the end of act 1 scene 1, Romeo still has a big crush on Rosaline, but Rosaline has no feelings for him. Hence, Romeo experienced a sense of depression and is conflicted by love. In this passage, Shakespeare uses numerous metaphors. “Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs.”
From the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare, is holding fate to blame for the death of the two lovers. In the line “from forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” foreshadowing, metaphor and alliteration are used to show how Romeo and Juliet’s love would end in tragedy. Foreshadowing is used to create suspense leading to a later scene in the play where the lover’s suicide. The metaphor “star-crossed lovers” suggest the prophetic alignments of the stars are against them. The lovers are ill-fated from the start.
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, ACT 3, scene 1 is a crucial in creating the circumstances that lead to the tragedy of the play. Shakespeare incorporates tragedy into Romeo and Juliet with the use of plot, language devices and aesthetic features. With these devices Shakespeare integrates poetic dialogue, forbidden love and devastating tragedy into the script of the play. In ACT 3, scene 1, Tybalt kills Mercutio and is killed by Romeo who is then banished by the prince, these unfortunate events contribute to the tragedy of the play. The scene begins with Benvolio and Mercutio hanging out, mocking each other and insulting the Capulets.
