Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is a Bildungsroman, a coming of age story that focuses on the psychological development, of the protagonist Catherine Morland. It has become far too easy to get away with judging a book by its cover. Due to social media and the internet, young people have been conditioned to gather a few choice facts about someone, and to subsequently categorize their worth in terms of those few, warped characteristics online, rather than take the time to know a person’s spirit before judging them. In this passage from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, the character of Catherine Morland is introduced. Austen uses literary techniques such as ugly diction, the inclusion of specific details, and a shift in tone to characterize Catherine as being a person who, in spite of her abundance of shortcomings, has an authentically good spirit, and is therefore lovable and valuable.

If a student is able to communicate well enough in his or her non-Standard English for others to understand, why should educators be concerned about non-Standard English usage? Students need to understand Standard English because it will greatly affect their future ability. If a student is not taught to use and understand Standard English, they will be less successful in school and less likely to seek a higher education. Standard English is used in all public and private schools in the U.S., which would make learning more difficult if not impossible for students who do not understand it. Students who grow-up using non-Standard English are taken less seriously and perceived to less intelligent therefore they become less successful as adults.

In Northanger Abbey the novel, Austen relies heavily on the narrative voice – particularly understatement – to satirize tropes of the gothic novel. The film does, in fact, use a narrator in the very beginning of the movie when detailing Catherine’s birth and childhood and that same narrator comes into play once again in the end of the movie for a kind of epilogue and wrapping up of plot threads, but it wouldn’t be plausible to use this narrator throughout the entire film. The film is very successful in portraying Catherine’s views of the gothic novel by cutting to scenes plucked from her imagination in which she projects the events of Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and Mathew Gregory Lewis’s The Monk onto reality, often inserting herself in place of the heroine and, in one particular instance, Henry Tilney as a hero. These scenes get progressively more over the top and melodramatic, peaking, perhaps, in the scene where Catherine imagines herself finding Isabella captured and bound to a bed by Captain Frederick Tilney, whom Catherine casts as the villain of the drama.
Right from the start of this passage I noticed that Jane has Captain Wentworth and Louisa by a hedgerow that Anna just happens to be sitting behind from. I think Jane purposely puts Anne in this situation so that Anne can easily hear the conversation between Louisa and Anne’s ex-lover Captain Wentworth. Another interesting part of the Captain Wentworth’s conversation with Louisa is how the captain describes Anne as amiable while he defines Louisa as a firm woman. Interestingly, Captain Wentworth continues to subtly show more disinterest in Anne. He calls Anne as “too yielding” and “indecisive a character.”
