In “The Dead,” written by James Joyce the main character Gabriel is revealed through imagery, diction, and time. With these techniques, the author reveals how Gabriel’s life truly is. One of the techniques being used in the story is imagery. The main character, Gabriel, uses imagery as he tries to figure out how his was before they got married. For example, he uses imagery when he says, “sitting in the same drawing-room dressed in black.” This text supports helps us see and imagine how he in dressed when Gabriel attends his wife funeral. Another text support is when the author mentions, “sitting beside him, crying and blowing her nose and telling him how Julia died.” This lets us visualize how Aunt Kate is feeling emotional when she is with Gabriel at Julia 's funeral.
