Define irony and explain how it was used in ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ story by Roald Dahl
Irony is defined as the use of words to express something other than and especially opposite to the literal meaning, irony is usually humorous/mocking, dark humour. In ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ Roald Dahl uses irony when Mary cleverly offers the detectives dinner and gets rid of the evidence, what makes this ironic is that while the detectives are eating the murder weapon one of them says ‘it’s probably right under our noses’. Roald Dahl uses this technique to make the story entertaining, a bit humorous and provides the story with a fun, quirky ending.

Part A:
The story ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ is written in is third person limited. Third Person limited is when the narrator is able to see the mind of a single character and can often make stories more effective. For example, “her (Marys) first instinct was not to believe any of it. She thought that she had perhaps imagined the whole thing. Perhaps, if she acted as though she had not heard him, she would find out none of it had every happened.” This shows that the narrator knows how Mary feels however throughout the story Marys feelings and thoughts are the only characters known to the narrator.
Part B:
Refugees are seeking safety worldwide due to unsafe countries. After reading these stories about refugees I have become much more aware of the critical conditions they have to live with. The use of emotive and descriptive language has helped me understand why they risk their lives in hope of being safe. I think its unfair and we don't appreciate what we have enough compared to what they deal with on a daily basis. I think that everyone has the right to be safe and deserves a fair chance at life therefore, I think that the situation they had been living in
