The story I read was Useful Fools by C.A Schmidt. The story is all about a young boy named Alonso, who lives in a poor shanty little town in Peru. He lives with his father, mother, and siblings. His father is a painter and his mother works at the local children's hospital. Alonso lives his life avoiding terrorism and the police. Therefor, the local police love to harass the poor residents. After a period of time, Alonso's mother receives multiple death threats from terrorist, but she doesn't give in. During a celebration of the clinic being open for 15 years, 3 masked men kill Alonso's mother inside the clinic. This leaves Alonso's family in disarray. One example is when the author describes Miraflores. He says, “A gap opened and Alonso and his father raced across, dodging like bullfighters around a speeding taxi”. I showed this in my project by showing the windy roads and the street sign. The street sign symbolizes how the police don't care about the poverty-stricken peoples actions. Another example of how the cops will harass the poor is “‘What do you know? Did the cops ever break down your door at two in the morning?’... ‘They broke down the door and started beating the carp out of everyone. Even my mother’”.
