For this week, I was assigned to read the chapter, Cravat Coal in Confessions of a Union Buster, were written by Marty Jay Levitt and Terry Conrow and the article was published in 1993. In the article, Levitt and Conrow talked about a lot of things but mostly Wagner Act and what the employers can do or not to the workers. The question for this assignment—“Based on details in the article, “Cravat Coal”, how does the Wagner Act favor the employer?” The authors talked about delaying time showed the workers that union is not a quick fix.

Matewan is the story of mine strikes in the West Virginia town of Matewan during the 1920’s. Matewan lies in the heart of Appalachia, and lies atop ground that is rich with coal. The town is primarily company owned, which includes the houses and stores. Unions are the centerpiece in the movie. The Industrial Revolution, starting in the 1880s, had brought out the emergence of a middle and working class in America, which hadn’t really existed before.

There were also many other nations who participated in the gold rush like Germany, Italy, North America, New Zealand, South Pacific, China. However, the British numbers were much larger than all other countries combined and the British had been involved with many other rebellions for their own rights before.

Dr. Shellen Wu’s article, titled The Search for Coal in the Age of Empires: Ferdinand von Richtofen’s Odyssey in China, 1860-1920, is about the movement from wood to coal as the leading fuel source all over the world in the late nineteenth century, and how geologist, Ferdinand von Richthofen, played a huge role in this discovery of coal as an abundant source of energy in China. The second sentence of the article clearly sums up Dr. Wu’s thesis. She states, “On the basis of his [Richthofen’s] travels over the next four years and seven expeditions, Richthofen coined the term Seidenstrasse (Silk Road); correctly hypothesized the origin of loess, the yellowish silt-like material covering much of North China; and described to the outside world vast deposits of coal in the Chinese interior.” Dr. Wu’s article goes along with the theme that we’ve discussed in class all semester, which is, “how have technological advancements throughout history
Coalmining was a prominent industry throughout eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Wyoming. In 1885, legislation was passed in order to restrict the working age of miners. Breaker boys, who worked aboveground to sort slate, rocks, and other debris from the coal, were required to be at least twelve years of age. Underground miners were required to be at least fourteen years of age. Boys ' parents often presented a fake birth certificate with an altered date of birth in order to have their children, who were often as young as five or six years of age, work in the mines.
In Cape Breton, the Sydney coalfield is one of the richest coal resources in the world. Before becoming miners, many poor European Immigrants came to Canada for hopes of earning more money than they did before, many Scottish immigrants settled in Cape Breton but remained poor and jobless. Business men in the late 1800s saw better use for the failing mining companies in Cape Breton if there was a railway built going from Sydney to Louisberg, the provincial government agreed to this which meant coal was not only worth more but the mines would not close during the winter months as they usually did. The dominion coal company took over many unprofitable coal mines in the Sydney Coal Field, many mining sites were built in Glace Bay when the coal industry really took, men were coming to get jobs daily in large numbers and The Dominion Coal Company hurriedly built boarding houses for the men to live in. After these boarding houses were built, they built school houses for the married miners children, hospitals, police stations and fire stations.

However, head twenty-three miles outside of Cardiff to the county of Merthyr Tydfil, and they will uncover a darker aspect of Welsh history: coal. Visitors will also find that Merthyr Tydfil still has a strong coal presence, and this understanding may lead them to ask a bigger question: How has the coal mining industry impacted the region of Merthyr Tydfil and how has it shaped the social and political climate in the area today?

Everyone likes a good bar of gold or iron, right? Well you might want to think twice about it next time you go to buy a diamond or some coal for a fire. Greenpace.org says that “Underground mines, which provide the majority of the world’s coal, allow coal companies to extract deep coal deposits. About 40 percent of the world’s coal mines are the more damaging strip mines.” and the mines are damaging our environment more than it is helping it.

Burning fossil fuels at high temperature produces electricity but also leads to pollutants in the air and water.
