Thesis- Using symbolism and point of view, Author Colleen Hoover communicates Lily Bloom’s ideal vision of a non-abusive relationship, similar to the one her parents had. Using symbolism, Hoover endorses that Lily’s heart tattoo represents the joy and pain she has experienced throughout her romantic life. During one of Lily’s many childhood flashbacks, readers come to learn that the infamous heart tattoo dates back to when her former love, Atlas, had been driven away by Lily’s dad. Before doing so, Atlas had carved an open heart into a tree that they both grew up admiring. After he left, Lily decided to use his image of the heart and create a tattoo. After it was finished, she realizes there was an unintentional gap where the heart connects.
