Utilitarianism is the theory that we should always try to bring about as much happiness as possible. It is hard to argue against the value of being happy, but critics are quick to point out that we value many other things as well. (Sir Bernard Williams, Rachels, 2010, p. 40) For me, this subject can be quite a tough one, and I will be honest, it is seriously causing me to think. The best way I can think of is this. I think of tv shows like the Walking Dead, and certain movies, where a person is presented with a choice. Either take one life, and save many. Or save one life, and sacrifice many. That does bring me to the game that Edward mentioned in class. The game infamous, where in this game there is this bomb that goes off where this main character happens to be, and out of all the people caught in the explosion, he was the only one that survived. And progressively in this game, you develop your powers, and as they develop you are presented with moral decisions that shape the heading of the game. Some involving saving people, and others involving killing people. It all depended on how you wanted the game to go. And in this one part in the game, you are presented with the choice of saving one life that is your girlfriend, and letting the many doctors who you were tasked with saving die. Now a lot of people would say that they would save the doctors. But truly, and sincerely think about it. Would you really? What if it was a family member up there? Or someone near and dear to your heart that you extremely cared for. What would you do then? These thoughts provoke many emotions in me when I truly think about it. Would you give up one person save many lives, and be deemed a hero? Or would you save one life, and be deemed the villain.
