The novel displayed the idea of a utopian society. Utopia refers to a community which possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities. This kind of society values egalitarian principles in order to sustain a structure and organization which made it often called as an intentional community for it creates an ideal society; that is so nearly perfect it if often portrayed as fiction. The first utopian principle was proposed by Plato – an infamous philosopher. He schemed that citizens in the first forms of utopia were categorized into a rigid class structure of golden, silver, bronze, and iron. These categories were referred as socio-economic classes. The golden was mostly composed of oligarchs and philosopher kings while the irons were made of slaves. People during this era were categorized in order to fulfil a function that shall stabilize the operation of their society. The wisdom of the rulers will supposedly eliminate poverty and deprivation through fairly distribution of function and resources. On the other hand, there were utopias which herald that science is the bridge towards human and society advancement. The Giver displays a so called “science and technology utopia”. Science and Technology utopia tends to base their actions in the future. Institutions of this utopia commonly exercise the firm belief that advance science and technology will allow utopian standards to prosper for example, the absence of death and suffering.
