Society has a negative, neutral, or positive effect depending on which one you live in. For instance, The Giver’s society is neutral due to the sameness so they are much different from our society. Its is surprising how different they are. The way they choose jobs, celebrate birthdays and mourn death are different from us. They do not even celebrate birthdays after twelve. Unlike our society in ways, the society in The Giver is a Utopian society. Birthday’s are a celebration of one’s birth. In The Giver, it states “Each December, all newchildren in the previous year turn one” (Lowry 11). “It was a secret selection made by the committee of elders” (Lowry 15). In our country, we are allowed to pick our jobs, but a committee or employer is their to decide whether we get the job or not. A terrible difference from societies is that Jonas’ society is not allowed to have breaks. “After the Ceremony of twelve, you’ll be with your assignment group with those in training. No more volunteer hours. No more recreation” (Lowry 17-18). That would be horrible in our society. At least we are still allowed to have days off, like teachers with Saturday and Sunday. Also, if you ask for a day off, using one of your vacation days probably, you may get it. Another crazy thing about their alternate society is that they get their jobs at twelve. That is definitely not normal for our society. “But his mind was still on December and the coming ceremony. Though he had been reassured by his parents, he hadn’t the slightest idea of what his assignment would be” (Lowry 19).
