The Colonial army lead by George Washington set up camp in Valley Forge to keep an eye on the British. It is winter and the colonial army is ill-prepared. I think that you should leave Valley Forge. One source of information is on the sick and death rate at Valley Forge (Doc A). About 25% of the people who went to Valley Forge died of diseases.
Quitting Valley Forge would be the best decision to do at the time of the winter storm. The first reason to believe leaving would be smart is the fact that there was an extraordinary amount of illness and deaths.(Document A) Fifty percent of the soldiers staying at Valley Forge caught sickness and more than an estimate of twenty-five hundred soldiers died. The camp was not safe in any way besides protection from The Lobster Backs but still you would have to guard the camp in case of intruders. The second possibility to why you might leave the winter camp was the convincing journal entry made by Dr. Albigence Waldo.(Document C) He claimed the bad hygiene was a huge disappointment in the camp, soldiers rarely got to shower, change clothes
What scares me is that the total death count was 4,000,and sick is mearly half of what troops we broght(doc A). I value life as much as I value the war,but I’d rather die in battle than in Valley Forge.
I could feel the rough winds and cold air hit my face. In the winter of 1777, Washington set out to Valley Forge, a place just 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia where the British lay. During this winter, it brought us some life threatening hardships. Would you re-enlist? I will not re-enlist Valley Forge for the following reasons of death and illness, harsh conditions, and lack of supplies and support.
Therefore, I choose to stay at Valley Forge, for there is a chance for me to not die of sickness because of the medical care, there is also patriotism, and people are willing to fight for our freedom. The documents A and C prove that only 14% died of sickness. there were about 12,000 of us to start with, and only about 1,800- 2500 died from December to June. Therefore, that leaves just about 9,500 of us left. However, with all the people that abandoned the Continental Army leaves us with just about 8,000 of us.
Valley Forge was a winter camp for Washington’s soldiers. During this time many died and got sick, but they also trained and got stronger as an army. Even though the colonists had a rough time at Valley Forge, I would have stayed. First off, in the engraving by William Henry Powell, Washington presented his soldiers to the Congressional Committee. Washington is telling the Committee about how he trained the colonists while at Valley Forge.
Third, the cold weather has caused me to freeze and the smoky air has messed up my senses. According to Document C, the air inside the huts is very smoky, but cannot be let outside because of the lack of opening and the cold air. This means that soldiers are constantly breathing in smoky air, which is not good for their health. The cold weather itself also causes a threat because without the proper clothing the freezing temperatures can cause sickness.
The army fell short of the ideal image the American public had created for it, as it lacked experience and professionalism. However, this would not last forever. The army gained professionalism during their time at Valley Forge, eventually resembling the institution the America public feared. Royster, defines Valley Forge as a, “test of national survival because it had been a test of the army’s survival amid hardships caused in large by fellow revolutionaries” (190). It also marked a turning point in the war, as it was the last time the revolutionaries expected to be united with the same enthusiasm as in 1775.
During the nineteenth century, Manchester,England was leading in textile manufacturing due to the cotton mill and it being the first industrialized city. The industrial growth increased the population to over 300,000 by a span of 100 years, this new increase was due to working class and immigrants. In document 1, there is a vast growth in the city of Manchester over the span of 100 years. Manchester was given representation in Parliament and the middle-class men received the vote. While the growth of industry was needed in Manchester for better development of modern society, it came with many issues.
In the winter, Washington took his troops to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles from Philadelphia. At this time, Valley Forge was a difficult place to live for the Patriots. It was a struggle but if I were a Patriot in Valley Forge fighting for Washington’s Army, I wouldn’t quit. I won’t quit for three big reasons; yes I know there were a lot of sick soldiers but not as much as dying soldiers, another thing is the conditions were horrible, but there were many brave soldiers who stuck with it, and stayed with Washington, lastly I do not want to be a “summer soldier” because freedom is valuable so it is worth fighting for.
First, I wouldn 't stay at Valley Forge because of death. Only the craziest people would have the guts to stay and just staying is a huge risk. From December to June, 1800 to 2500 people died so I think that says enough about Valley Forge. (Doc A)
Waldo’s central focus in his diary entry is the struggles the army went through at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777. He talks about how the troops are becoming sick, are running out of food, are exhausted, and have very poor living conditions in the harsh cold. According to Albigence Waldo, “Here all is confusion, smoke and cold, hunger and filthiness.” Additionally, he discusses the effects of these harsh conditions on the soldiers. Their situation causes them to become downcast with loss of faith and hope of surviving through the winter.
In times of fear and hysteria in the U.S. it is mass chaos and it only gets worse and worse. During the time of both the witch-hunt eras, whether for communist or actual witches, they prove to have many similarities between them. Both of these times were full of confusion and lying which lead to the temporary downfall of the authority at that time. Joseph McCarthy proved to be a factor in this time and add on to the chaos that was America. Arthur Miller wrote about these times in a book called The Crucible, based on the witch trial era.
Being in the snow isn’t always fun. It is January 1, 1778 and I have been serving my term at Valley Forge. I have been very miserable which has made my experience here dreadful. I’ve finished my time as a soldier but I have the option to re-enlist or come back home.
The climate at Valley Forge is horrible. The soldiers are constantly freezing. They have a choice between freezing cold, or smoke. The huts that the soldiers stay in have a fireplace but they don’t have a chimney so all of the smoke is trapped in the hut and they can barely breath. The soldiers get smoke in their lungs and it is horrible.
