It is wholly recurrent to blindly skim through a detailed piece of literature and be unconscious to the likeness it shares with other pieces of literature. I am surely guilty of this ignorant practice, however. As I was reading “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde and “On Turning Ten” by Billy Collins, I didn’t truly perceive the connection right away. The obvious was already divulged in my mind; they’re both in the points of views of children. They, however, both have a mutual theme; growing up brings uncertainty and disappointment.
Many teenagers often ask themselves who they are and what they believe. As they search for an answer, they slowly begin to build their identity. The principles that underlie the universe of obligation allows adolescents to continue to find their identity. Because of this, impressions or previous stereotypes conceived then usually stays with them until adulthood. Elie Wiesel’s Night and Helen Fein’s Universe of Obligation helps allows teens to understand the world around them.
In the reading, “Our Bella, Ourselves” written by Sarah Blackwood talks about “a strong heroine” and how different female characters in novels are portrayed. However, it’s clear that Stephine Meyers isn’t concerned with challenging or changing how we see gender in society or what it’s like to have certain genders. Unlike Sarah Blackwood, she questions the number of issues that feminists will have trouble addressing after reading the series. The main point of this piece is to be able to feel empathy for the main character (in this case Bella) so that you can relate to the core of the reading. Sarah Blackwood also wants the readers/ her students to be able to appreciate a piece that is written by a woman, for a women, about a young woman, because they might have something important to teach us about women’s lives.
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
Since Kristina’s mother and stepfather raise her baby, she is free to go about her life as a carefree teenager, and continues to snort, smoke, and inject crank, even though she has a newborn at home, which does not teach readers that she is forced to deal with the consequences of her actions (Hopkins, 536-537). Clearly, many parents have problems with the larger themes and messages in Crank, and YA literature in general, because of its mature and explicit content. Adults want to protect their child(ren) from the dangers of the outside world for as long as possible and novels like Crank threaten to subvert that desire, and expose adolescents to the dark, unpleasant, and disturbing side of life beyond soccer practice, dance class, and student council meetings. The topic of self confidence is a subject that is heavily discussed when it comes to girls of all ages. Journalist, Stephanie Hanes, examines the current trend of sexualization amongst young girls. In the article “Little Girls or Little Women: The Disney Princess Effect”, Hanes examines the current trend of sexualization amongst girls. She addresses the issue of desiring to become a women too soon. Hanes develops her article by using the literary techniques of pathos and logos to describe the emotions young girls feel when they see images of women with unattainable features.
Sexuality in adolescence Sexuality is the most notorious and common sign of development in adolescence. “The House on Mango street”, by Sandra Cisneros is a coming of age novel, where Esperanza transitions from a girl into a young teen. In her journey, Esperanza comes across many challenges, she is forced to grow up by life’s adversities. In the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, a mother advises her daughter and scolds her into becoming a decent woman. In her guidance, the mother is worried about her daughter’s sexual activity and warns her about the consequences of improper behavior.
“The Outsiders” is a novel written by S.E. Hinton. Originally Published in 1967, Hinton was only 18 when her novel hit the shelves. Instead of using her real name Susan Eloise Hinton, she used her initial’s so people wouldn’t know she was a girl making the book less desirable. The Outsiders is considered a cult classic and is typically assigned reading across the U.S. She always loved reading but did not like the books they had for young adults
In her hauntingly beautiful novel Tell The Wolves I’m Home, author Carol Rifka Brunt introduces readers to June Elbus, a distinctively shy, sensitive, and gloomy teenage girl growing up in New York in 1986-1987. June’s favorite uncle and person Finn has AIDS, a disease that takes his life in the early part of the book. June learns that Finn had a lover, Toby. At the end of the story readers see June and Toby forming an unlikely friendship. The author also uses phrases such as ‘went on her knees’, ‘bent over me’ and ‘arched her neck she actually licker her lips’ these phrases only add to the hyper-sexuality of the text. The images the author presents show that women in fact do contain sexuality, even though it is when they are vampires they do seem to possess sexuality. This simple statement changes how society today views women, people of that era began embracing the reality of female sexuality allowing the women of today to be themselves.
Many people fall or trip without getting a concussion, so this quote is an example of just how fragile Bella is portrayed. Bella, who is thinking to herself in the quote, also believes that, that could happen and if it did it would happen to her, as she is very clumsy. That she could ruin the world just by falling down or tripping. It is quite disconcerting that other feel this way about her and even more worrisome that she believes that she is fragile and should be submissive. This is also true about young girls who are portrayed as fragile and submissive.
