Van Gogh's Grey Hat

During late 1886 and early 1887 Van Gogh created a self-portrait of himself in a grey hat. This self-portrait was a lot different than the first one he created earlier in the spring of 1886. One of the main things that stand out from this portrait is the color. The pallet he used is a lot lighter compared to the one he previously used. It contains pure colors that resemble an impressionistic style. Van Gogh’s brush strokes add on to this style some areas contain mixed colors while others are unmixed for example the green and red brushstrokes on his coat, which increase contrast and vitality to his portrait.
