Rhetorical Précis In her rhetorical essay “From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hos” (1999), Wesleyan University graduate and feminist Joan Morgan claims that if a man cannot love himself, than he is incapable of loving women in a healthy matter, and it is up to women of color and the African American community to change these threads. Morgan supports her claim using ethos by questioning artists such as B.I.G and their aggressive lyrics, with logos by providing statistics from the U.S Census Bureau in regards to the decrease of the number of black two parent household, and also with pathos by providing a personal example of her family friend. Morgan is hoping to improve the music industry by examining hip hop and rap lyrics in order to raise awareness instead of censoring the industry. Morgan's tone is disdainful, concerned and disappointed in order to establish credibility with her audience, which consist of women of color, feminist, and hip hop artist.
The Rolling Stone Magazine & The Impact It’s Had On American Culture Amanda Humphrey University of Phoenix HUM/186: Media Influences on American Culture Instructor: Terri Thorson February 26, 2023 The Rolling Stone Magazine The publication of my choice is a magazine. This magazine is called “The Rolling Stone.”
In America, the 1980s was a time of political change, social tension, and music by Madonna. It was a decade full of new technologies and big changes. Journalism and other forms of media also saw many changes in the 1980s that helped it advance into the industry it has become today. Perhaps the most influential changes in journalism in the 1980s were a newfound competitiveness in the market caused by money, the advancement of cable television, and the deregulation of media during the Ronald Reagan administration.
The short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’Brien, takes place in South Vietnam where the soldiers are fighting in the war. Many people did not want the US to enter the Vietnam war. People shunned the soldiers who went to war because it was their duty. Although some soldiers knew it was not the right thing to do, they did it anyway knowing they had to protect their countries.
Everyone has their flaws as no human being is perfect nor will one ever be perfect either. “There are plenty of beautiful women that do not fit the projected form of beauty that we have been taught to idolize. Still, women constantly attempt to change the way their bodies are meant to be, in order to look like the edited models and airbrushed actresses we see in our favorite shows, movies and magazines.” (Curly) Women working behind magazine companies are playing apart in the downgrading of women as well and some don’t even know it. An average magazine cover is either a woman known to society as a very pretty or attractive woman, with a face full of makeup and on the side bringing attention to the main article of something like “find out the simple way to get this amazing body or how to lose weight in 10 days.”
Stepping into Vanity Fair was like stepping into a new world. The visitors of Vanity Fair were being transported into a whole new world. It offered exotic, foreign foods from places likes Cuba, Mexico, China, French, Germany and much more!(75) You could be riding a camel down the streets of Cairo, watching the “coochee-coochee” girls, belly dancers, in the Cuban village, or watching the parade of the Chinese dragon or a Chinese beauty show in the Chinese village all in a day.(75, 82, 88) Extravagant rides were offered on elephants and a Venetian gondola. Many amusement rides were also offered: Barnard’s Airship, a Giant Seesaw, the Chutes, and many more starting at the 10 cents a ride.
For Augustine, faith is not only the starting point of the knowledge of God, but also the turning point of the restoration of the image of God, the salvation of human beings. The theology of Augustine is the most important foundation of the Reformation, and the interpretation and application of faith in Augustine give origin to two major doctrinal developments of the later Reformers. Luther brings forth the Justification, the doctrine of being justified through faith, by following the approach of grace of God in Augustine. Calvin not only has more comprehensive and refined integration of his teaching of faith and grace in his doctrine of Justification , but also follows Augustine's epistemological approach of contemplation as the basis of
In America, Media bias is everywhere, in the United States all the information that an average American received through everyday sources, the news was most likely processed through the media and told through a biased point of view, when the media gets their hands on news if it is important then it probably won’t be talked about or downplayed no matter the source like in the newspaper, radio, television, movies, as well as other outlets that the media uses, the media only seems to share the news that they find interesting, even then the media would most likely have changed the story, in what they say is just tweaked news, what actually happened and what really happened would be two different stories, also the story would be told from one person
A favorite magazine of mine is Cosmopolitan. In my opinion, I think magazines are less effective as a national medium as opposed to television, radio, or the Internet. Magazines are less effective because they do not cover a range of stories, and this causes fewer people to read magazines. For example, Cosmopolitan focuses on health, fitness, relationship advice, beauty tips, and some political topics instead of focusing more on national and breaking news around the world. I noticed a lot of magazines focus on pop culture stories for teenagers and young adults like celebrity news stories.
When thinking of the media you think they are reporting the appropriate and accurate information not based on any personal opinions and feelings. Also one would not think the media would be reporting based on one side of politics or the other. The media is extremely biased when it comes to politics and news. While some of the media is conservative-biased I believe the mass media is liberal-biased. Majority of media outlets are liberal companies, media personnel and journalists will identify themselves as democrats and liberals more so than republicans or conservatives and lastly the left side (liberals) of the mass media is persuasive on what information to report.
From magazines to advertisements, women are constantly being exposed to beauty ideals - many of which are unattainable. This results in women falling victim to the manipulations and lures of the marketing industry. Since its establishment in 1886, Cosmopolitan has been a popular source for women to turn to for advice on relationships, sexual activity and popular culture. During its inception, the magazine was published as a women's fashion magazine initially depicting articles on families, home decorating, and the progress of science and technology. However, while Cosmopolitan is still viewed as a magazine targeted towards women, the methods in which the magazine attracts women have dramatically evolved.
EXTENDED ESSAY- GENDER BIAS IN THE MEDIA TOPIC: How does Media portray gender, and the effects it has on the 21st century individual? By: Calvin Mends INTRODUCTION:
Tabloidization is the change in the format of newspaper into the tabloid form and enhanced focus on entertainment and celebrities deviating from the serious issues. Media is the imperative as well the integral element of polity and the fourth estate of the democracy. The present trend of media is more of a show than a medium of delivering the news. Media has taken to gossips, sex and sensationalization which distracts the attention of the people from the real issues around the world. Glamour is now a regular dosage in the everyday newspaper, which gave birth to the so called page 3 culture.
Beautiful, skinny size 6 celebrities such as Keira Knightley are a prime example of this. The article headings are vitally important too. Beauty and sex tips seem to be the popular sellers. Liz Jones, the former editor of the Marie Claire said 'Nowadays, when the average time spent choosing a magazine and lifting it off the shelf is about three seconds, the covers make or break a magazine. You need lots of cover lines [– the phrases like 'Great sex today!' promoting articles in the magazine], and they all have to be compelling' (Jones,
