This past Sunday, June 18th, America lost muslim teen, Nabra Hassanen to what most call road rage, and others, a hate crime. Hassanen, accompanied by a group of friends were headed back to a local mosque after a trip to a fast-food restaurant. It was then that they encountered driver Darwin Martinez Torres and an argument erupted. The altercation escalated, resulting in the capturing and death of 17 year old Hassanen. Torres had beaten her with a baseball bat, abducted her, and dumped her body into a lake.
The Story of Maci Kean When you think of people in a kid’s life, you probably imagine two parents, siblings, friends, and teachers. What you don’t typically think is a social worker, a judge, foster homes and a dead mother and father. This became the case for the then 15-year Maci Kean, as well as over 100,000 kids in the United States. When Maci was just a toddler, she became deaf due to a high fever and her father passed away when she was just two due to drug abuse. When she was around the age of 13 her mother passed away as well due to a drug overdose after getting out of jail.
For this final project, I listened to Emily Tigges and Greg Dobihal’s presentations on their family’s history and musical roots. Greg’s family has Czechoslovakia (father’s side), German (mom’s side), and Dutch (mom’s side) roots. Located in eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has very distinct genres of music. The most popular, the polka, is a form of Czech folk and dance music that utilizes a wide range of instruments, including accordions, trumpets, clarinets, tuba, and others. He also noted the important and popularity of Czechoslovakian classical music, citing Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” as an example.

Katsushika Hokusai is an artist born on roughly October 31, 1760 and died on May 10, 1849. His father an artist who focused on creating art around the outside of mirrors is said to be his influence when he starts painting around the age of six. At the age of twelve his father sent him to work at a book shop and during these times the books were on wooden blocks and used to entertain the upper and middle class. He became an apprentice to a wood carver and continued to work there till eighteen and after he was allowed into the studio of Katsukawa Shunshō to be taught by him. Here he began working on his first pieces of art mainly of Kabuki actors.
Pokémon Go was released and it instantly skyrocketed in popularity. Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game, in app form, that encourages the players to go outside and play in order to succeed in the game. The game itself has experienced economic success, but by encouraging people to go out, it has caused economic growth in other factors. The point of Pokémon Go is to get its users up and out in order to catch Pokémon.
On November 16th, 2015 at 7:30 PM in Williams Hall, I attended the cello concert performed by Sophie Shao. This performance included the Seven Variations on the theme “Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen,” from Mozart’s Opera, “The Magic Flute,” by Ludwig Van Beethoven; Sonate in D Minor by Claude Debussy; Five Pieces in Folk Style op.102 by Robert Schumann; and Violin Sonata op.78 (transcribed to a cello sonata by Paul Klengel) by Johannes Brahms. Sophie Shao began playing the cello at age six and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Yale College and a master of music degree from the Yale School of Music. Her accompanist was Milana Strezeva, a Moldovan-American pianist who began playing piano at the age of 11.
As a person who is playing piano, I choose “Yiruma”, an Asian pianist and composer, for my composer report. I didn’t know about him until I listened to his piece of music, “Kiss The Rain”. After learning his biography, I was not only impressed by his musical style but also historical impacts in the classical music industry. “Yiruma” is known as pianist and composer who lived South Korean. “Yiruma” is a stage name of Lee Ru-Ma, he got that name because its meaning, “ I shall achieve” in Korean.
A person only has one first impression. This does not mean that the person is who they seem to be. The story behind their body art shows their personality and who they are. What led them to choose the outfit they are wearing or why they chose to dye their hair also factors into this. A person is also defined by what they say but especially by what they have permanently on their body.

Music affects us on a daily basis, and comes in a vast array of genres and styles that can appeal to anyone’s tastes. It is a beautiful form of art that can change our emotions, help us to escape the commotion of the world around us, and inspire. Perhaps the most magnificent thing about it is that there is always more to make.
